JOHN DAY – In the market for locally grown, grass-fed beef?
Your quest just got easier.
Field’s Grassfed Beef of Prairie City has opened a shop at 133 W. Main St. in John Day.
Throughout its 10-year history, Field’s has operated primarily through grocery store sales, website orders and deliveries, and word of mouth. The store location makes it more accessible to customers.
What sets this beef apart from other varieties? The Fields say it’s the cattle – crossing Hereford cows and Piedmontese bulls, the latter which are native to northern Italy.
Jeremy Field, who runs the family business with his father, Dick, said Piedmontese carry the unique “Myostatin gene,” which is the key to the genetically tender quality of Field’s beef.
“We’re proud of the breed of cattle,” Field said. “It’s a superior product.”
The family touts the tenderness and taste of the beef, but also note its health benefits – high in protein, low in fat, calories and cholesterol, and with a balanced Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio. Customers can be assured that Field’s beef is natural, environmentally sound and locally grown, fed only grass and grass hay in open grazing land near Prairie City.
The business offers a wide selection of beef cuts, in individual quantities and family packs, and plans for future products include salami, pepperoni and jerky.
Field’s Beef is continuing its online sales business and deliveries.
The John Day shop is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Through the summer, Field’s Beef will also have a booth at the John Day Farmers Market across the street, 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The store is closed Sundays and Wednesdays.
