Pesticide training class

Grant County Senior Citizens Advisory Council meeting


• 11 a.m, Prairie City Senior Center, 204 N. McHaley St.

The purpose of the semi-annual meeting is to introduce new members of the council appointed by the Grant County Court and entertain new business proposed by council members. The public is welcome to attend.


Thursday, Dec. 14

Light Up a Life


• 6 p.m., Valley View Assisted Living, 112 Valley View Drive, John Day

All are welcome to the candlelight remembrance, which honors loved ones who have died. The service, organized by Blue Mountain Hospice, includes readings, music and refreshments. Donations are accepted at the door and help provide end of life care for hospice patients. For more information, call Blue Mountain Hospice at 541-575-1648 or email sross@bluemountainhospital.org.


Friday, Dec. 15

A snowman Christmas party


• 2:30 p.m., Blue Mountain Care Center, Prairie City

The care center will host an afternoon of festivities for residents, their families, and anyone else who wants to attend. Snack food, non-alcoholic drinks, Santa and live music will be provided. RSVP by Dec. 12 by calling the care center at 541-820-3341.


Saturday, Dec. 16

Christmas bird count


• 7 a.m., Outpost Restaurant, John Day

Participants in the 37th annual count will meet at 7 a.m. Participants should dress warmly and be prepared for the weather. Bring binoculars, field guide, lunch and beverages as most parties will be out the full day. The compilation and monthly bird club meeting will be at Cecil and Irene Gagnon’s home at 5:30 p.m. For more information, contact Tom Winters at 541-542-2006 or ducksouptom@centurytel.net.


D.L. Jones book signing

Community Christmas celebration

Everyone is invited to celebrate the Christmas season. Refreshments will be served and the winners of the 2017 Christmas decorating contest will be announced.

Antone Christmas bird count


• 8 a.m., Thomas Condon Visitor Center, Highway 19, two miles north of the junction with Highway 26

Joel Geier will be conducting a bird count centered on the John Day Fossil Beds. The compilation will take place after 4:15 p.m. For more information, contact Geier at joel.geier@peak.org.


Friday, Dec. 25

Christmas dinner


• 12:30 p.m., John Day Senior Center

Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer and his wife, RoseAnn, will host their annual Christmas dinner of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, dinner rolls and stuffing. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and punch will also be provided.
