JOHN DAY – Spring break began with unusually warm and pleasant weather in the John Day Valley, with blue skies and temperatures soaring into the 60s on Monday.

If it seemed too balmy to be true, start looking for conditions to change to something more commonly seen during spring break and especially for that local event, the Les Schwab Icebreaker Baseball Tournament.

The National Weather Service says the local area can expect temperatures to dip to freezing at night and reach only the mid-40s to low 50s in the daytime the rest of the week. Showers are possible each day into the weekend, forecasters say.

Baseball fans and people looking for spring break entertainment will still find plenty to amuse them, with the tournament running Thursday through Saturday at Seventh Street Complex in John Day.

Prairie City and Grant Union teams will face teams from as far as Eugene, Estacada, and Scio.
