Americanism essay writers place in state contest

Five local Americanism essays place well in state American Legion Auxiliary writing contest.

JOHN DAY – Five local Americanism Essay contestants received word last month that their entries received top honors at the state level.

The essay contest is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Ellis Tracy Unit #77 of John Day.

Essay chairman Joan Bowling of Canyon City announced the winners. All are students in Grant School District No. 3 schools.

In Class 5, Grant Union Junior-Senior High School’s Mikayla Luttrell, senior, finished in first place; Braden Witty, senior, second.

In Class 4, Grant Union’s Blake Stone, freshman, received first place; Marta Faulkner, junior, second.

In Class 3, Humbolt Elementary’s Warner Robertson, sixth grade, earned first place.

First place winners receive $50 and second-place winners receive $20.

There were no essays from the district moving on to the national level this year.
