CANYON CITY – Crews from several agencies tackled a blaze Sunday night in the Canyon Creek area on County Road 15.

John Day Fire Chief Ron Smith said his department received the call shortly after 6 p.m. to respond to the brush fire 2-1/2 miles up the county road, also known as Canyon Creek Lane, from Highway 395.

The fire burned close to a house and other structures but crews gained control before the flames could spread to the buildings.

John Day Rural firefighters responded with three engines and a tender, and the Canyon City Fire Department with two engines. Both departments were joined by Oregon Department of Forestry and Forest Service crews, who took over the firefighting and mop up duties.

ODF John Day Unit Forester Rob Pentzer said the ground crews were aided by fire aircraft as they worked to get the blaze contained.

He said the fire started when a snag fell onto a power line. The blaze, all on private land, was held at a little over 4 acres.
