Note: This is the final part of a Q&A series in which the Eagle offered candidates a chance to introduce themselves to the readers.

Four people are seeking two positions on the Mt. Vernon City Council on the ballots for the Nov. 4 general election.

Here’s a look at the candidates:

Mike J. Cearns

Why are you running?

I’d just like to continue to help make Mt. Vernon a nice place to live. There’s work to do to improve the wastewater system. I was the maintenance support for several years. I’m aware of what it takes to work the maintenance – the working part of it. Of course, that will take time, but I will be retired and have time to participate. I’ve been around Mt. Vernon since 1980. It’s a wonderful place to raise your kids.

What elected offices have you held, if any?

None.

Describe your community involvement.

I was appointed to serve on the Mt. Vernon budget committee going on three years. I’ve been on the Mt. Vernon Fire Department since 1984. I’ve been with both the city and rural fire departments. When we first started the Cinnabar Mountain Rendezvous, I was the president for several years.

What is your main goal, if elected?

To help in any way that I can. It takes a lot of time and involvement. I’m aware of some of updates the city needs to go through. My ideas may not always be right, but we’ll make it work. I can work with the council. I know them all, and I’ve known them for years. It’s like family, a great place to live.

Why are you running?

I am running for a city council position because I love where I live and want to help out. We are a small town filled with really good people and need a few positive changes to happen.

What elected offices have you held, if any?

None.

Describe your community involvement.

During the past seven years that my family and I have lived here, I have been a member of the PTA, served on the board of Families First, became a founding member of the Grant County Piecemakers Quilt Guild as vice president and now president, and I am secretary for the Cinnabar Mountain Rendezvous.

What is your main goal, if elected?

My main goal for our city is to have new playground equipment installed in our beautiful park. The existing equipment is very old and not up to code, it desperately needs to be replaced. Our families and visitors deserve an inviting, safe place to play.

Why are you running?

I worked for the city of Mt. Vernon for 17-1/2 years, and I’m retired now. I thought, Why not do my civic duty? I know how the city runs, and I enjoy working with the city and doing anything to help out.

What elected offices have you held, if any?

I was appointed to the city council in January, when a position came open after someone moved. I am still serving in that capacity.

Describe your community involvement.

I was on the Mt. Vernon School school board in the 1980s. I have worked all my life, I know the people and enjoy working with the council members.

What is your main goal, if elected?

I would like to see the citizens take more pride in their homes and yards with cleanup and so forth. We all work really well together on the city council and agree on most everything with no fighting or squabbling. I would like to see more citizen involvement in the city council meetings.

Why are you running?

I grew up in Mt Vernon, and I’d like to get younger generations involved with community. I’d like to become more involved in the process of moving forward to better the community.

What elected offices have you held, if any?

None.

Describe your community involvement.

I’ve served in the past as vice president and president of Cinnabar Mountain Rendezvous, and I’m currently a member. I’ve helped with community cleanup and beautification projects, such as flowerbeds at the community hall and street cleanups.

What is your main goal, if elected?

I’d like to work on updating the city park with new playground equipment and see more beautification projects done around town.
