JOHN DAY – A trio of stolen car reports kept police busy in John Day on Christmas Eve, ending with the arrest of a local man the next morning.

The action began about 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, when police learned a pickup truck had been stolen from the John Day Trailer Court and then abandoned at a home on Trafton Lane. The truck had run out of gas.

Reports to police indicated the driver then took a vehicle from the Trafton Lane residence, but it crashed in the area.

The driver fled on foot, and a third car was reported stolen at a LaCosta Drive address. The third vehicle – a 2003 Honda SRV, went off-road and across the John Day Golf Course.

A Grant County Sheriff’s deputy located the Honda near the Grant County Industrial Park on Christmas morning.

The driver, Ethan Thomas, 24, was arrested and taken into custody.

He faces preliminary charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and criminal mischief.

Undersheriff Todd McKinley said agencies including the Sheriff’s Office, John Day Police and Oregon State Police cooperated on the case.
