A hazardous material investigation is currently underway at the Grant County Correctional Facility after Sheriff Glenn Palmer, between noon and 1 p.m. today, opened an envelope addressed to him containing a white substance.
In a matter of seconds, Palmer had a reaction to the substance, including a skin rash on his arms, according to a county official at the scene. Palmer was taken to Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day for treatment and observation.
In the meantime, the correctional facility next door to the Grant County Courthouse in Canyon City was cordoned off while hazmat personnel work to decontaminate the area and any others that may have come into contact with the substance. The investigation by the Oregon State Police and Grant County Sheriff’s Office is ongoing.
