PRAIRIE CITY – Due to a recent “near miss” between children on bicycles and patrons exiting Prairie City businesses, the City of Prairie City is now enforcing an existing ordinance against use of wheeled devices on Front Street.

The ordinance, 10.10.2(a), states that no one may use any roller or in-line skates, roller blades, skateboards, scooters, bicycles or similar transportation on any Front Street sidewalk. Those failing to comply with the regulation may be fined a maximum penalty of $25. Parents of minors may be cited.

City officials have received complaints of other similar incidents.

The municipal code has been on the books for over 10 years, amended and adopted July 14, 2004. The law applies only to Front Street sidewalks.

A copy of the city’s municipal code on the matter is on display at the Prairie City post office.

Anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to call city hall at 541-820-3605.
