Doug Ferguson, of Ferguson Surveying and Engineering, will present his plans for minimizing flooding along Canyon Creek during a public meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Grant Union High School old gym.
Stakeholders impacted by the flood mitigation efforts are strongly encouraged to attend the community meeting.
Due to the destruction of soil stabilizing vegetation from the Canyon Creek Complex Fire, there is potential for a substantial increase in flooding along Canyon Creek.
The hydrologist from the Forest Service’s Burned Area Emergency Response, or BAER, team estimated water flows could be three times higher than previously experienced, and will have a significant effect on the Canyon City and John Day area.
Long and short term projects to minimize the impact from increased flood waters will be discussed at this meeting. These projects will have an impact on many landowners along Canyon Creek from the John Day River to the upstream city limits of Canyon City.
Local residents will have an opportunity to ask questions.
