The Grant County Sheriff’s Office reports that numerous people from around the county reported being contacted this morning by someone purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service.
“The past history of these calls on unsuspecting people have proven that these types of phone calls are a scam,” Sheriff Glenn Palmer said in a press release Jan. 9. “These callers typically try to get a person to settle their issue informally and often use threatening and demeaning tactics to strong arm our vulnerable population into wiring money to a person to resolve a situation that doesn’t truly exist.”
Palmer said very little could be done to track down where these calls originated.
Anyone who receives a call from someone stating they are from the IRS should hang up the phone, Palmer said. They should not engage in conversation with the person or call them back if they left a message.
“Most importantly, do not give personal information to callers over the telephone,” Palmer said.
Anyone who wants to report one of these calls can do so by calling the sheriff’s office at 541-575-1131.
