Long Creek/Ukiah has a junior varsity volleyball team of 10 this season, including five returning starters.

Some of the new girls on the team are having their first experience playing the sport.

Foreign exchange students Juana Wagner of Germany and Joe Nun of South Korea said this is their first time on a volleyball team.

“It’s my first sports team,” said Nun. “It’s hard, but exciting. It feels friendly.”

Wagner said she was nervous in their first matches, but she’s looking forward to their future games.

Coached by Linda Studtmann and Reagan Enriquez, the team kicked off its season Sept. 9 with a second-place finish at the Harper Tournament.

Studtmann said the athletes are starting to get to know one another and picking up the game.

“They are doing well, learning quickly how to play and to work together as a team,” Studtmann said. “We are looking forward to a great year.”
