The Grant Union Prospector boys started off the Dec. 21-23 Nyssa Christmas Tournament with a 71-45 win over the Wilder, Idaho, Wildcats.
Grant Union head coach Kelsy Wright said they started the game blind, not knowing their opponents.
After the Prospectors trailed 17-14 going into the second quarter, Wright said they switched up to a man-to-man defense and “controlled the game after that.”
Grant Union led 34-24 at the half.
Wright said Wilder had some excellent shooters, but they couldn’t compete with Grant Union’s height and speed.
The Prospector boys had tougher contests in their remaining games.
Grant Union had a narrow loss to the 3A Nyssa Bulldogs on Friday, 57-52.
They fell 76-57 to the 4A La Grande Tigers on Saturday.
“We had some great competition at this tournament, and it helps us get ready for our league,” Wright said. “I was very proud of all the boys and how hard they played.”
He said his team was limited on players due to illness and one for eligibility.
Grant Union varsity teams host Prairie City varsity on Thursday, Dec. 28. The girls play at 6 p.m., boys at 7:30 p.m.
Grant Union has two road games next week.
