Melvin A. Kite, 97, of John Day passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Blue Mountain Care Center in Prairie City. A graveside service was held Monday, Oct. 30, at the Canyon City Cemetery.
Kite was born in Yreka, California, on Nov. 12, 1919, to Alpheus W. Kite and Mae L. (Baker) Kite. He served two years in the United States Army and then went on to become a heavy equipment operator for numerous companies. He married Thelma L. Gentis in Winnemucca, Nevada, in June of 1966.
Kite enjoyed woodworking, gardening and attending events at the John Day Senior Center. He was also a member of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by a sister.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Kite, of Prairie City; son Jerry Kite and wife, Sherry, of Utah; stepson Walt Gentis and wife, Donna, of Canyon City; stepson Steve Gentis and wife, Nancy, of Tigard; half-brother LaDell Merk and wife, Margret, of Payette, Idaho; half-sister Alma Fisk of Council, Idaho; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
