William “Billy” Kerstein, 66, of Kelso, Washington, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, at his home. A celebration of life will be held this Memorial Day at the annual family reunion in John Day. Details will be posted later. All who knew Kerstein are welcome.
Kerstein was born in Butte, Montana, on Nov. 21, 1951, to Wilbert and Lorene Kerstein. The family moved to Long Creek when he was about 2 years old. He was raised in the John Day area, graduating from Grant Union High School. After high school, he joined the Navy and served four years.
Kerstein married Becky Johnson when he returned home from the Navy. They later divorced.
Kerstein is survived by three children, sons William Jr. and Mathew and daughter Shirley. He is also survived by brothers Jimmy and wife, Debbie, and Terry; sister, Candace; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Kerstein enjoyed anything country and western. He enjoyed playing guitar, spending time with friends and family, working on old trucks and cars and fishing for salmon and steelhead with his brothers. He also was an accomplished baker. His engaging smile will forever be missed.
