Republican Dennis Richardson is leading Democrat Brad Avakian in the race for Oregon secretary of state.

According to early vote totals released at 8 p.m., Richardson leads Avakian by 46 to 44 percent.

Richardson, a former state legislator, and Avakian, the state labor commissioner, both have sought election to higher stations. Richardson lost to John Kitzhaber in the 2014 gubernatorial election, while Avakian unsuccessfully ran to unseat Suzanne Bonamici in Congress during the 2011 Democratic primary.

If elected, Richardson would be the first Republican elected to statewide office in 14 years.
