JOHN DAY – Fire crews are conducting prescribed burns on the Blue Mountain Ranger District beginning today and continuing through the weekend.

About 1,600 acres are planned for treatment in the Damon North project area near Pearson Creek and two miles east of Swick Old Growth, north of Seneca.

Forest users should drive with caution, and expect intermittent smoke along roads and heavy traffic from fire crews in the burn unit vicinity. Signs will be posted informing visitors about the upcoming burns. Forest visitors can expect to see engines and fire crews monitoring these fires until they are declared “out.”

Prescribed burns are designed to both reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires and restore overall forest health.
