JOHN DAY – The Prairie City and Blue Mountain ranger districts will go to Industrial Fire Precaution Level III on Monday, Aug. 4.

They join the Emigrant Creek Ranger District, which moved to IFPL III on July 23.

The fire danger is rated “high” on the north end of the forest and “very high” on the south end.

The change means the entire forest will have the following restrictions:

• Campfires will be allowed only in specific developed recreation sites. Campfires must be attended at all times, and the campers must have an ax, shovel and gallon of water available. See below for the list.

• No internal combustion engine operation is allowed, and chainsaw use is prohibited. Electrical generators may be operated only in the center of a cleared area, or contained in a pickup bed, or when factory-installed in an RV with exhaust discharge to a cleared area.

• Smoking is allowed only in enclosed vehicles or buildings, developed recreation sites or cleared areas.

• No off-road or off-trail vehicle travel or travel on roads not cleared of standing grass or other flammable material. No vehicle travel on forrest roads where access is barricaded, bermed or gated, or identified in the forest’s fire order.
