JOHN DAY – The John Day/Canyon City Parks and Recreation Community ski bus to Anthony Lakes will run again this winter for at least two trips during January.

Organizer Greg Whipple noted said that for the program to continue, an increase in participation for the two trips is essential.

The program has provided a healthy activity on Fridays for the youth of the community for close to 20 years, he said, and thanks to the generosity of the Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort, its’ been an inexpensive way for them to learn to ski or snowboard.

But participation has waned in recent years, along with the local high school population. The bus has been opened up to welcome families and other adults in the community to participate and take advantage of the lift, rental and lesson discounts.

If the turnout is good enough in January, more trips may be scheduled during February and March.

Whipple urged people to plan for the ski trips in January and watch for more details on signups in early December from Parks and Rec.
