Ashlyn Dowers from Madras is a picture of concentration as she maneuvers her horse, Zee’s Smokin Joe, in front of the judges. She finished second in the English Equitation 24 and 25 combined, and took fifth in the English Pleasure competition for 14- to 17-year-olds.
Harnessing equestrian talent
JOHN DAY — The Grant County Open Class Horse Show held Aug. 16-17 featured special awards to participants.

During the competition, 2003 Grant County Fair and Rodeo Queen Jill Tirico joined her grandparents, Lonnie and Lis Davis. Lonnie fashioned a custom-made bit as an award for the top novice rider at the show.

Following are results of the special awards

Grand Champion Stallion — Kristen Short, Horse blanket donated by Chester’s Thriftway

Grand Champion Mare — Misty Davis, Horse blanket donated by Clark’s Disposal

Grand Champion Gelding — Jessica Willie, Horse blanket from Les Schwab Tire Center and halter from Livingston Ranch

Anita Winegar-Scull Memorial Trophy and head stall donated by Winegar Family — Dee Bailey

All-around Senior Stock Horse — Beverly Howe, buckle donated by Gary Lively Trucking

Loren Bezona Memorial Trophy and buckle donated by Bezona Family — Jim Hamsher, trophy donated Strawberry Mt. Riders 4-H Club

High-Point Performance, youth — Tiffany Wolf, silver-mounted head stall donated by Patrick’s Saddlery.

10-and-under Youth Award — Kipp Miller, saddle pad donated by Tack Room

13-and-under Youth Award — Lorelle Bowling buckle donated by Grant Western Lumber.

14-17 Youth Award — Bre Earl, buckle donated by Jackson Oil Company and Pat Hutson, graphic designer.

Novice Rider Stock Horse — Don Moody, buckle by Quarter Bit Paints

Novice Rider Award — Kim Perlot, bit by Lonnie Davis

Bob and Violet Sproul Memorial Trophy — Tie between Kay Brewer and Beverly Howe, trophy donated by Grant County Horse Show Committee and halter by the Livingston Ranch.

Open All-around Horse — Misty Davis, bit by Ernie Marsh

High-point Trail Horse — Jessica Willie, $100 cash prize by Broken Hammer Appaloosas.
