Pit bulls tear into LC man
Victim is flown to Bend for surgery

Blue Mountain Eagle

LONG CREEK - Two pit bull dogs attacked a Long Creek man, severing his nose and causing other facial injuries, as he started to walk into a local residence last Sunday, June 15.

The Grant County Sheriff's office said the attack occurred about 7 p.m. as William Barloon Jr., 29, went to the home of Diana Taylor, the owner of the dogs.

The front door was partially open, and Barloon opened the screen door to enter. Sheriff Glenn Palmer said Barloon was a neighbor of Taylor's and had visited the home without any problem before.

This time, however, a male pit bull lunged at Barloon and latched onto his face, nearly knocking him off his feet. A second dog grabbed Barloon by the left arm.

Taylor pulled the first dog away from Barloon's head.

Palmer said the Long Creek Ambulance was dispatched to the scene to pick up the seriously injured man. That crew was met by the John Day ambulance while en route to Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day. An Air Life helicopter was dispatched to take Barloon to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

Before the flight, however, Dep. James Burgett located Barloon's nose at the attack scene. He enlisted the John Day Police Department's help to rush the appendage to the hospital in time to be transported with Barloon on the helicopter.

Dep. Todd McKinley also responded to the call, and subsequently destroyed one of the pit bulls at the owner's request.

Palmer said the incident remains under investigation in cooperation with the Grant County District Attorney's Office.
