WASHINGTON, D.C. - Oregon's national leaders made statements of support last week for the efforts of Grant County residents to resist establishment of an Aryan Nations headquarters.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) made a statement in the Congressional Record, noting that Grant County residents "have shown us all what a community looks like."
He lauded the residents for turning out, in overflow crowds, for two Feb. 26 public meetings held by the Blue Mountain Eagle, and for those who demonstrated for diversity and tolerance in downtown John Day.
"You know there's something special going on when one out of every six residents of a small rural county come to learn how to protect their community from a group that would destroy it," he said. "Since then the Grant County Civil Rights Coalition has been formed. It is a remarkable group of people, all working to make their home a better place."
Second Congressional District Rep. Greg Walden also spoke out while attending a gathering of credit union officials.
He drew applause when he praised local residents for their stand on the white supremacist group's stated intent.
"As Oregonians, we need to stand up to them and send a very clear message, that we don't welcome the Aryan Nations in John Day, in Grant County, or anywhere in Oregon, period," Walden said.
The Oregon Democratic Party also weighed in, with delegates to its quarterly meeting passing a resolution lauding the county's courage and commitment "to the cause of freedom and decency in their stance against the Aryan Nations."
"They are fighting not just for their community, but ultimately, for all of us," the statement said.
