The Prairie City football team takes a break during the first quarter of their 66-6 win over Burnt River.
Prairie City starts strong

By Jack H. Smith
Sports Reporter

PRAIRIE CITY - The Prairie City football team made a strong opening statement with a 66-6 road victory Sept. 11 over Burnt River.

"We were prepared and we executed well," head coach Scott Hoberg said.

Rather than focus on individual players, Hoberg said he was pleased with the entire team.

"It was a great team effort," he said.

Playing with just one senior, Tel Winegar, Prairie City (1-0) gave up just one touchdown.

Marshal Mecham led Prairie City with 170 yards on the ground. Brady Doty added 72 yards.

Burnt River was able to score on an 80-yard play. Hoberg said his team never gave up on the play.

Hoberg added his younger players played well and he hopes to see his young squad continue to gain experience.

"Our first-time starters all did some good things," Hoberg said.

This week the schedule tightens up for the Panthers as they host Mitchell/Spray. The Loggers (2-0) picked up their second win with a 68-38 road victory over Dayville/Monument/Long Creek.

"They have a very good football team," Hoberg said. "We'll have to find a way to stop their blitzing."

Hoberg said his team will have to contain quarterback Nolan Fischer and running back Jason Starr.

"We will have to be a ready for a total football team," "It will be a good test to see how far we've come.

The game is slated for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the new Prairie City football field.
