PRAIRIE CITY – The Lady Panthers shared scoring honors in a two-game sweep on the Prairie City court last week, defeating Mitchell/Spray and Adrian.

Facing Mitchell/Spray on Friday, the Panther varsity took charge most of the first quarter to fuel the 59-19 league win.

Junior varsity team members contributed to a scoring hailstorm the rest of the game, with floor leadership from one or two varsity members at a time.

Eleven Panthers found success at the basket.

Mitchell/Spray is 10-2 overall for the season, while Prairie City is 6-4.

Penny Black, who coaches with Dennis Fast, said the Panthers excelled in teamwork, with assists enabling everyone to score.

“Plus, our young girls responded really well to playing at a higher level of aggressive defense,” she said. “We are proud of the JV squad for committing to play at a higher level and playing so well as a team.

“The Lady Panthers need to be very proud of themselves for showing such great respect in helping each teammate to succeed,” she said. “They are a joy to coach.”

Prairie City had a more even pairing with Adrian on Saturday, and also another strong start – outscoring the Antelopes 17-3 in the first quarter.

The teams stayed close in scoring the rest of the game, but the explosive start put the Panthers on track toward a 37-24 victory.

“We were moving the ball well, finding the open shooter and scoring,” Black said of the first quarter.

The shooting success fell off late in the second quarter and the half ended with Prairie City still in the lead, 24-12.

The third quarter had the Panthers outscoring the Antelopes 8-6, and Antelopes out-shot the Panthers 6-5 in the fourth.

Black said the Prairie City defense gave the Antelopes “a lot of grief,” with 25 steals as a team effort and 10 assists, and “we shot just good enough to come up with the win.”

The Lady Panthers were matched up for a third time this season against Crane on Tuesday, past press time, and travel to Ukiah Saturday to face Long Creek/Ukiah at 2 p.m. for the Panthers’ second league game of the season.
