Student musician receives $1,500 Juniper Arts grant

Samantha Floyd

Grant Union High School junior Samantha Floyd, a trombonist, has received a $1,500 grant from the Juniper Arts Council.

The funds will support Floyd when she tours Europe next July as one of several members of the Oregon Ambassadors of Music group.

Kris Beal, president of Juniper Arts, said the council made the decision at their Nov. 8 meeting to award the grant to Floyd.

“The Council, whose mission is to promote the arts, arts education, and cultural heritage in Grant County, was wowed by Samantha,” Beal said, adding the funds will allow Floyd to advance her knowledge and experience in music.

Floyd, who enjoys composing music, has taught music lessons through the Youth Arts Program, and teaches 10 piano students and one ukulele student from home.

She is also a member of the Chamber Music Society of Harney County, playing both trombone and bassoon, and plans to continue teaching YAP classes and, in the future, major in music.
