GRANT COUNTY - The trout at Bull Prairie Reservoir and Magone Lake may be pretty hard to get to. The waters are ice-covered and access roads are unplowed and inaccessible for vehicles, notes the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Access to Olive Lake, with rainbow and kokanee, also is blocked by snow.

Ice covers both Long Creek and Cavender ponds, which are open year-round and hold trout.

Trout fishing at Holliday Park pond is fair. It has carryover trout and recently-stocked rainbows.

Trout Farm Pond is also fair for anglers. The spring-fed pond remains ice-free, but anglers must walk through snow for access to the pond with rainbow and brook trout.

Fishing for steelhead on the John Day River is fair, unless ice or muddy water prevent it. The water is very cold. Most fish are being caught between Bridge Creek and Monument on bait and jigs.

Steelhead fishing is also fair in the John Day arm below Tumwater Falls, until the season closes on March 31.

All wild steelhead that are caught must be released back into the river unharmed.
