SALEM - Senior Josh Arnall was the only member of the Grant Union High School wrestling team to place at the OSAA/US Bank/Les Schwab Tires Class 1A/2A state wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19 at the Fairgrounds Pavilion in Salem.

The 140-pound competitor was an 8-2 winner over Gilchrist's Andrew Wilson in the opening round before defeating Dustin Millsap from Sheridan in a 14-0 major decision in the second round to advance to the semifinal match.

Arnall, the No. 2 seed in the tournament pinned the No. 3 seed Hunter Thornton from Central Linn in 59 seconds to reach the finals against Dayton's Barry Johnson.

Johnson, the two-time defending state champion and the No. 1 seed in the tournament, is the only wrestler Arnall has lost to this season.

Johnson and Arnall went to double overtime the last time the pair met at the at the Sierra Nevada Wrestling Tournament in Reno, Nev., where Johnson was a one-point winner.

Saturday's championship match was another good one and once again Johnson won, this time 7-5.

At 171 pounds, Sam Stinnett drew a bye in the opening round, then was pinned by Tyler Best from Clatskanie at the 5:22 mark in his second round match.

In his first-round consolation match, Stinnett was pinned by Dayton's Tyler Wilson and was eliminated.

The same fate befell Gus Stiner at 160 pounds.

After a first round bye, he was pinned by Alsea wrestler Curt Chillcote at the 2:21 mark in his second match.

In the first round of consolation, Stiner lost a close 2-1 decision to Lance Strickland from Joseph.

In the 130-pound division, Logan Titus drew a first-round bye before getting pinned by Kyle Ring from Scio at the 5:19 mark in the second round.

Up against Brady Becker in the first round of consolation, Titus was a 10-0 loser to the Santiam wrestler.
