Austin Michael Murphey, a former airforce serviceman, died Jan. 2, 2006, at Lackland Airforce Base in Texas. He was 22.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Jan. 8, 2006, at the Nazarene Church in John Day.

Mr. Murphey was born Nov. 6, 1983, in Pendleton to David Lee Murphey and Roberta Beers Murphey. He was raised in John Day and graduated in 2002 from the Prairie Christian Academy in Prairie City. After a year of training, he was stationed in Germany for two years. He had volunteered to take another service man's tour of duty in Iraq and was scheduled to be deployed Jan. 17, 2006.

Mr. Murphey enjoyed hunting, fishing, video games, music, but most of all he enjoyed being with his family.

He is survived by his parents, brother, Tucker, sister, Pepper, who live on their ranch, Hot Creek Ranch, in Nevada; grandparents, Ruth Forbes and Jack and Sharon Beers, of Pendleton; four aunts; six uncles; and nine cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Myrtle and Vernon Murphey, of Hermiston.

Full Honors Military Burial will be held Jan. 14, 2006, on the Hot Creek Ranch in Nevada. Services in Nevada will be handled by Gunther Funeral Home in Tonapaha, Nev. 89049. Memorial contributions can be made through the Nazarene Church in John Day.
