BANDON -- A Bandon high-schooler is one of nine Oregon students who will compete in the state Poetry Out Loud competition at Willamette University on Saturday.

Last weekend, 24 Oregon high-schoolers competed in regional Poetry Out Loud competitions in Ashland, Beaverton and Salem.

Stephanie Gordon was one of three finalists from the Southern Regional Contest at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. She won alongside Cascade Christian High's Rebekah Ratcliff and St. Mary's School's Kylie Winger.

The recitation contest requires participants to memorize and present poems and practice public speaking skills while exploring the complexity of poetry.

The winner of the state contest will advance to the national Poetry Out Loud competition April 29-30 in Washington, D.C.
