Pete and Ella Baucum

JOHN DAY - Pete and Ella Baucum were named "Sweethearts of the Year" by Ellis Tracy Post of the American Legion and Auxiliary and were honored during a Feb. 14 dinner at the American Legion Hall.

Commander Jack Sanders and President Peg Hunter conducted the meeting with Father Robert VanSickler offering prayers.

Ruth Harris presented a "mock Coffeetime" interview with the Baucums recapping their life together and their involvement with the community and the Legion groups. Relatives and neighbors from the Baucum's "Frying Pan Ranch" up Canyon Creek were in attendance.

Pete is a World War II veteran and has been an active Legion member. He taught at Grant Union High School for 29 years. Ella is a retired nurse who worked in our community for many years. She has been very active in Legion Auxiliary programs.

Maxine Day led the singing of the National Anthem and sang several songs honoring the couple.

The Baucums were presented a gift certificate. They also received a standing ovation at the end of the program.
