Bo Thunell picked for Prospector post

Bo Thunell

JOHN DAY - A new, yet familiar face will be in the dugout next year to coach the Grant Union High School baseball team.

Shortly after the resignation of coach Ryan Carpenter, former Prospector standout Bo Thunell interviewed for and was offered the position.

"It is a rarity you grow up, play for a school, and then are able to come back and coach," Thunell said.

Last season, Thunell finished up his playing career at George Fox University in Newberg.

Thunell had anticipated being drafted or signing a free agent contract, but instead decided on returning to his alma mater.

"It is a nice feeling," Thunell said. "I've always wanted to be a coach."

Thunell said it is an honor to be able to follow in the footsteps of his father Art Thunell, whose coaching career ended in 2005 and who now directs the John Day/Canyon City Parks and Recreation District. Art Thunell ended his coaching career as Oregon's winningest high school coach.
