JOHN DAY - A 41-year-old Eugene man was taken into custody on a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and at the time of arrest, officers discovered that he was also in possession of burglars' tools and suspected drug paraphernalia.

John Day Police were notified by a citizen of a possible intoxicated driver in front of Prime Time Video; when an officer arrived, the vehicle was just leaving the area.

A short time later, Officer Tom Hutchison and Oregon State Police Trooper Josh Brooks stopped the vehicle and took Matthew Edward Cauthorn into custody.

Officers then searched the vehicle Cauthorn was driving and discovered tools commonly associated with burglaries and also suspected drug paraphernalia, according to the police report. Cauthorn was lodged in the Grant County Jail.

John Day Police Chief Kent Wyatt encouraged local citizens and businesses to report anything that might be connected with the incident. The investigation into Cauthorn's activities continues.
