Burke, Wedel cast victories

JOHN DAY - There were 21 girls and boys in the Bassmaster Casting Kids competition-held by the John Day Valley Bass Club on Jan. 15, in the Trowbridge Pavilion at the Grant County Fairgrounds, with the New Beginnings Flea Market.-

Fourteen of the youths competed in the 7- to 10-year-old division and-seven competed in the 11- to 14-year-old division.

Wesly Burke won the 7-to 10-year-old division, with a score of 50. Marissa Wedel and Toby Yazzie tied, with scores of 90 each-at the end of regular competition. Marissa won the competition with the winning cast in the castoff.

-Wesly and Marissa are eligible to compete in the state Bassmaster Casting Kids competition, where they could win a trip to the semifinals in Orlando, Florida.

Five youngsters from each age group will advance to the finals, held with the Bassmaster Classic Tournament in Pittsburg, Pa.,-where they could win $5,000 scholarships and $1,000 cash awards.

In addition to the local club and the Oregon State Bass Federation, this contest is made possible by BASS, Citgo, Toyota, Purolator, Triton Boats, Mecury Outboards, Berkley, Abu Garcia, Lowrance Electronics, MotorGuide Trolling Motors, Bass Pro Shops, and Zebco.
