Burns batters Pros 40-0

JOHN DAY - The opening game of the 2003 football season on Friday, Aug. 29, was not a happy one for the Prospectors and their loyal fans.

Facing Burns, which is expected to be one of the top teams in the 3A Greater Oregon League in a non-league contest, Grant Union could not stop the arm of Hilander quarterback Marlon Dick and the fleet-footed Talon Hofman as Burns rolled to a 40-0 victory.

Dick picked the Grant Union secondary apart passing for 227 yards and three touchdowns, and Hofman added an additional 123 yards on the ground against the young Prospector team.

"Burns has a very good team and they are expected to do well in the league this season," Grant Union coach Monty Nash said. "Honestly, they beat us up front. They have one of the best coached offensive and defensive lines you're going to see and we knew that going in. This was a good test for us."

The Prospectors held the Hilanders scoreless in the opening quarter, but Dick went to work in the second period hitting Taylor Kness from 5 yards out with 10:22 remaining for a 6-0 lead.

Hofman scored his first touchdown on a 35-yard scamper with 6:53 left and added his second TD of the quarter on a 12-yard run at the 2:02 mark good for a 20-0 halftime advantage.

Grant Union couldn't seem to get its offense in gear and managed just six first downs in the game.

"I'm not displeased," Nash said. "I thought our effort was good. We didn't have a lot of depth and so I didn't have us try to do a lot of things."

A 26-yard Dick to Hofman screen pass at the 7:51 mark of the third period made the score 27-0 and the Hilanders tallied twice on the final period on a 47-yard pass from Dick to Kness and a 3-yard Nathan Blevins run.

On Friday, Sept. 5, the Prospectors play at Nampa (Idaho) Christian at 7 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time; 6 p.m. local time). Last year, aided by the passing game, the Prospectors eked out a 33-28 win over Nampa Christian.
