Carl F. Elmer of Bend, died July 11.

A memorial service is at 2 p.m. Friday, July 16 at the Powell Butte Christian Church in Powell Butte.

Mr. Elmer was born Sept. 23, 1922, to Frank and Margaret (Morris) Elmer. He grew up in Cove where he attended high school. He worked on his parent's ranch until joining the army in 1942. He served in five theaters in Central Europe until discharged in 1945. Elmer returned to Alicel, married and returned to ranch management in the 1950s. In 1960 he established "Elmer's Saddling" in John Day.

He served on the Grant County Fair Board and helped establish many rodeos and horse shows. He trained cow cutting horses and competed throughout Eastern Oregon in the 1980s.

Mr. Elmer was a member of the Christian and Baptist churches in Grant County.

Survivors include one son, Dennis of Bend; one daughter, Gwenn Roberts of Bend; one brother, Russell of Cove; one sister, Wanda Hughes of Grants Pass; and one grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions can be made to any charitable organization of one's choice.
