JOHN DAY - A community barbecue and potluck set for 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Seventh Street Complex will highlight the milestones people are having on the road to recovery from addictions to alcohol or drugs.

"It's something that needs to be celebrated," said Russ Comer.

He's the prevention manager for Grant County and staff member for Grant County Safe Communities Coalition which is sponsoring the event.

The get-together includes recovery speakers and games, and educational materials will be available.

Those planning to attend are asked to invite their family and friends and bring a potluck dish.

"The idea of national addiction recovery month is to promote the fact that society benefits from alcohol and drug addiction treatment," Comer said.

He noted local resources available to those seeking extra help in addiction recovery including social, church and 12-step support groups and addiction counseling treatment.

Community Counseling Solutions (CCS) in John Day, which also is helping at the recovery event, offers addiction counseling treatment and they have a list of local support groups.

"We hope members of the community can see that recovery from any type of addiction is possible," Comer said.

For more information about support group meetings call CCS at 541-575-1466.
