JOHN DAY - Four planes took over 80 children on airplane rides Sept. 9 at the Grant County Airport, during the Grant County Fly-In. Some of the kids got to man the co-pilot controls.

Zack Carpenter, 13, and Dylan Brandsma, 13, were two of the lucky flyers.

"When we were flying there was a gust of wind and I accidentally pushed down and it was like falling in an elevator," Zack said.

"When you go down, you can feel your stomach drop," Dylan said.

Garrett McConnell liked the take-off most.

"It was cool," Garrett said.

Local pilots were Barbara Smith, Bob Bagett and Tom Berry. Baker Aircraft volunteered the fourth plane. Ron Lundbom dropped tootsie rolls from an ultralight. Dave Traylor showed his patriotism by flying a six-chuter powered parachute with an American flag trailing. Forest Service rappellers gave demonstrations.

Shcarol's Catering of Fox served 150 meals of mouthwatering pancakes, ham, fruit, eggs and various beverages.
