JOHN DAY - Fire Chief Ted Johnson presented certificates of excellence awards to nine members of the John Day Volunteer Fire Department in a ceremony at the beginning of the Tuesday, July 13, meeting of the John Day City Council.

"I've only been the chief here for about nine months or so, and these awards are just a small token of my appreciation for the work these volunteers have done," Johnson said. "I didn't know just how this was done so I had these awards made up myself. Maybe next year we can do something else. This is just my way of saying 'thanks' to these men and women for providing emergency services to the community."

Receiving awards were Robert Watt, Kevin Brock, Jesse Kygar, Dale Stinnett, Terry Hanson, Claudia Tacy, Steve Stinnett, Alvin Gilliam and Shawn Tacy.

Along with the certificates, the volunteers also received a check from Chief Johnson.

"Don't open the envelopes now, it's not a lot of money," he said with a smile. "It's just a small token of appreciation for your dedication to serving the citizens of John Day."
