JOHN DAY - Brian Delaney is back where he started.
When Delaney recently moved back to Grant County from Idaho, one of his first calls was to talk to Grant Union High School principal Mark Witty about the baseball program. Within minutes, Delaney was working with Grant Union baseball coach Ryan Carpenter on the 2009 season.
"I just called principal Witty and asked if there were any coaching spots open and like five minutes later I got a call from Carpenter asking if I was interested in coaching. It all just went from there," Delaney said.
Delaney may be new to the 2009 Grant Union baseball team, but he isn't new to the Grant Union baseball program. He played middle infield for the Prospectors from 1995-99 and coached under longtime Grant Union coach Art Thunell.
"It feels good to be back with the Grant Union baseball team," Delaney said. "I coached with Thunell in '03 and it's great to be part of the program again. It's nice to be part of a program with such a long history and tradition in Grant County."
Delaney played infield for Clackamas Community College and has coached for several years. He was recently a coach for the Madison County Steelhead club team out of Idaho.
While with the Idaho team, Delaney had the opportunity to work with players including pitcher Matt Lindstrom. Lindstrom now plays for the Florida Marlins and Team USA.
