JOHN DAY - The Grant County Chapter of the Oregon Hunters Association and the Grant County Stockgrowers are sponsoring a Cougar Management Program in the county for the year 2006. A drawing will be held Jan. 15, 2007, for hunters that kill a cougar during the year.

To be eligible for the drawing, a person needs to legally kill a cougar with Grant County and take it to the ODFW office in Canyon City to be checked by their personnel. At that time, request a copy of the cougar data sheet that was filled out and mail it to Lenny and Sherri Dowdy at 27664 West Bench Road, John Day, OR 97845 or call them at 575-0207.

Participants need not be a resident of Grant County, but the cougar must be killed within the county and some identifying proof of which must be presented. The contest is retroactive to the first of the year 2006, and any legally taken cougar taken during the year is eligible.

First prize will be a Winchester model 70 classic featherweight (your choice of caliber), with a 3x9x40 mm rifleman leupold scope, sling and case.

Second prize will be a Savage model 10 (your choice of caliber), with a Simmons 3x9 scope, sling and case.

The state OHA conducted a similar statewide contest in 2005, which was won by Roy Peterson from Monument.
