CANYON CITY - County Judge Mark Webb last week laid off four workers from the county road crew.

"Due to a persistent lack of sufficient work, it has become necessary to initiate a layoff, for an indefinite period, beginning tomorrow," Webb wrote in a March 24 notice.

The layoff is unlike the "temporary layoff" ordered in January because county court is not sure how long the layoff will last. Officials did not expect to recall the workers within 10 days - the period required for temporary status under the collective bargaining agreement.

The workers are among 11 Grant County Road Department employees represented by Local 701, International Union of Operating Engineers.

The letter said the layoffs were done by seniority.
