CANYON CITY - Officials have suspended the search for Kathleen Jordan, missing and presumed drowned in the John Day River, at the request of her family and with the concurrence of the Sheriff's Office.

Jordan, 81, was reported missing May 9, and evidence indicated that she entered the John Day River near her home about a mile west of Mt. Vernon.

The river was running high at the time due to the spring rains and melt from higher-than-usual snow accumulations last winter.

Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer said the family believes that everything that could be done, has been done. The relatives expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Sheriff's Office.

Palmer said the department has logged several hundred hours in ground and air searches, using deputies, Sheriff's Posse members and volunteer pilots.

He said that although the search is suspended, staff will continue to conduct spot checks along the John Day River from Mt. Vernon to the Wheeler County line.
