Deschutes County is the fastest-growing county on the West Coast. Overall, Oregon's population grew by about 30,000 over the year ending last July.
The areas that saw the largest number of new residents were Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas, and Deschutes counties. That's according to new numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Portland area moved down a spot in the rankings of America's fastest-growing communities. The Charlotte, North Carolina area bumped the Portland metro down to twenty-fourth place.
Charles Rynerson is with Portland State University's Population Research Center. He says the state is growing faster than it was during the recession.
"It seems like Oregon is a place that many people want to live," Rynerson says. "Another factor is retirements, you know as the huge baby boomer population retires, assuming we don't lose jobs, people will have to fill those jobs and so we're likely to attract more people moving here to fill those jobs."
Deschutes County had the biggest percentage growth of any county in Oregon.
Two counties saw significant population decreases - Wheeler and Harney.
