REDMOND - The Blue Mountain Eagle won six awards in the annual Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspapers Contest.

The awards, announced last week at the organization's convention in Redmond, included three first-place and three third-place honors.

The awards, given by circulation division, are:

? Best Writing - Scotta Callister, first place, and Angel Carpenter, third place.

? Best Religion Coverage - Angel Carpenter, Cheryl Jessup, David Heldreth, first place.

? Best Editorial Page - first place.

? Best Sports Page - third place.

? Best Lifestyle coverage - Angel Carpenter, Cheryl Jessup, David Heldreth, third place.

Callister, the Eagle editor, said she was pleased to have the paper's efforts noted, although providing a service to the community through the newspaper and the website,, is the staff's top priority.

"Recognition by one's peers is wonderful, but the true reward comes in creating a newspaper that serves, informs and reflects our readership. That's always our goal," she said.
