Opting to go with the plan most favored by members of the business community and residents living on South Dayton Street, the John Day City Council gave its approval to Alternative Plan No. 1 for street improvements.
The street improvement project is scheduled to begin construction this summer, and we welcome it. We also commend the city for involving residents in the planning process.
Four alternatives were presented, and if Plan No. 1 is good enough for the people on Dayton, it's good enough for us.
The road is deteriorating and it's time to fix things along that short path that is a favorite speedy shortcut and an accident waiting to happen.
Under the plan, parking will still be available on both sides of the road and a sidewalk will still be on the west side of the street.
Anderson-Perry and Associates is designing the project. Bids will go out in the spring, and the hope is that the project will be done by the end of summer.
Final costs are unknown, but fixing that street before a tragic traffic accident would be priceless.
