Elks name Ashley, Reid scholarship winners

JOHN DAY - A special ceremony was held Jan. 22 at the John Day Elks Lodge to honor applicants of the 2004 Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship contest. Students and their parents attended the dinner and awards ceremony.

Nathaniel Ashley of Dayville, son of Jeff and Babett Larson, and Brittany Reid of Prairie City, daughter of Matt Reid and Kelly Reid, were named winners and each received $250 from the John Day Lodge. In addition, their brochures advance to district competition in Ontario on Feb. 7, says Scholarship Chairman Carol Rudishauser, who presented the certificates and checks along with Elks Exalted Ruler Drew Harmer.

Cassi Ross of Long Creek was named runner up at the local level and received $100. She is the daughter of Carmen Norris.

Other applicants included Amanda Rockhill, Eve Denton and Cherise Ricco.

The contest is sponsored by John Day Elks Lodge 1824 and the Elks National Foundation.
