Extreme bullying leads to charges

Parma, Ohio. -- (WKYC) A substitute teacher and several students are facing criminal charges after a violent bullying incident.

Police in Parma, Ohio say the incident occurred on February 28 about 9:30 a.m. in the gymnasium at Parma Senior High School.

The victim, a 14-year-old developmentally challenged student, was in gym class when another student began striking him in the head with a volleyball while other students watched on.

Enough force was used by the juvenile that the victim eventually fell to the floor. The victim appeared disoriented. As he staggered back to his feet, a 13-year-old girl approached the victim and kicked him in the groin.

A substitute teacher walked over to the victim, who was still lying on the floor. The teacher dispersed a number of students who gathered to watch and then walked away from the victim. The teacher remained in the gym while another pair of boys approached the victim and began sliding into the victim as he was still lying on the floor.

A 14-year-old boy also dragged the victim face down by his feet across the gym floor. A 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy squatted over the victim and simulated obscene acts near the victim's head while he lay motionless on the gym floor.

The teacher was cited for endangering children. Two boys and one girl were charged with assault. The other two boys were charged with disorderly conduct. The case is still under investigation and additional charges are possible after consultation with prosecutors.
