Fire duty

Fire duty

Sgt. Edward Lewis of John Day joined other members of Grant County's unit of the Oregon Army National Guard to participate in firefighting duty on the Siusalaw Fire in late August. Upon returning home, Lewis said of his tour of duty on the fire lines, "They called. I'm glad to have done my part. That's why I joined the Guard." As of Aug. 26, 903,000 acres had burned in Oregon. The next largest recorded acreage loss to fire in Oregon was in 1865 when 883,000 acres went up in flames. This year's acreage loss was equivalent to 1,257 square miles, an area that could be laid out as a 10-mile-wide strip stretching from John Day to Ontario. Fire season is not expected to end until after September. Grant County's unit previously worked at fire duty near Paisley.
