Freda Mae McWillis Tubbs, 91, died May 3, 2011, at Valley View Assisted Living Facility. A Celebration of Life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the John Day Nazarene Church. A potluck dinner will follow at the John Day Senior Center.
Mrs. Tubbs was born May 4, 1919, in Portland, to Fredrick Franklin and Mary Elizabeth (Gienger) McWillis. She lived her entire life in Oregon, except for two years she spent in California.
On June 27, 1938, she married Joe Wheeler in Bend, with whom she had three children, Billie Jean, Barbara Lee and Robert Joe. They divorced July 25, 1962.
She married Merlin Tubbs, with whom she had one son, Fredrick Michael. They divorced in 1968.
She enjoyed gardening, reading, needlework and writing poems, some of which were published. She also canned many fruits, vegetables and meats, right up until age 91.
Survivors include daughters, Billie Jean Wheeler, of Halsey, and Barbara Lee Keener, of Redmond; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and longtime friend and caregiver, Dorothy (Midge) Brant.
