NYSSA - The Grant Union Volleyball team opened the 2002 season in impressive fashion under new head coach Adam Barrett, winning its first two matches Thursday, Sept. 5.
In the opening match against Wapiti League foe Nyssa, the Prospectors were three-set winners with scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-9.
In the second match against Vale Grant Union once again emerged as three-set winners, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-20.
"Overall, I thought the girls played extremely well in both matches," Barrett said. "The kids were a little scared in the first two games against Nyssa and we didn't play very well, but we settled down and did all right. The win over Nyssa was a big confidence builder, so we now know where we stand with them."
In the Vale match, Barrett said the Pros were very fortunate to come away with a win against the Vikings.
"We lost a lot of players off last year's team, and I didn't know where we stood against Vale. They have some huge hitters and a good setter on their team, but we just out-played them and did everything well. Winning against Vale really lifted our confidence; we have never defeated them before."
Barrett said Kim Mathews, Amanda Courchesne and Ashley Workman all had outstanding games for the Prospectors.
"This was a good preseason opener for us," Barrett said.
